So, the use of embryonic stem cells for life-saving research has been vetoed.
And if I understand correcly, all of those stem cells would have been derived from the left-over results of in-vitro fertilization, right?
And the President vetoed the use of such for life-saving research because that would destroy life.
OK.
But wait a second. Unless those embryos are implanted in a mother's womb they can not lead to a life.
And without every one of those thousands of embryos being implanted in a mother's womb soon, they are - today - headed for one place: incineration.
What the heck? Something doesn't jibe here.
Is this veto condemning these embryos to utter destruction with no purpose?
Yes, they're safely frozen at this moment. But every frozen embryo for which there is no money to pay for continued freezing-away has to be thawed-out and autoclaved.
After all, a thawed-out embryo can not be used for anything other than putting into a mother's womb, to potentially create a baby, or use in potentially life-saving research.
I'm assuming at the same time, the Executive Office or the GOP Controlled Congress has already approved a plan - right now - to take each and every embryo left over from in-vitro fertilization and assure it's use in the "snowflake" program?
That is, there is now funding to pay for all the thousands of unused embryos to be frozen away until such time as they are all claimed for implantation in a mother-to-be. Right?
And also, there's funding for a nationwide expansion of the "snowflake" program so that everyone out there knows how to go about getting financial help to pay for implantation with an embryo, right?
Right?
No?
But, I was assuming there were those "snowflake" children were in the photos to help announce the ingenious plan to implant each and every left-over embryo into a mother's womb. You know, so that the embryos, not being used for life-saving research, would be assured of use in creation of life and not, in fact, destroyed.
But, no?
What, were those few and so-very-rare "snowflake" children just props?
Well, so doesn't that mean that absolutely nothing has changed and these unused embryos will continue to be disposed of daily, having no other purpose???
I am shocked!
<strike>Will no Senator point this out on the Senate floor?
Maybe point this out to the 3 extra Senators needed to override the veto?
</strike>
Or am I missing something?
I probably am and I usually do.
What do you think?
Update [2006-7-20 7:46:8 by HadIt]:
I must have not had enough coffee this AM. BarbinMD put up a rec'd diary showing Sen. Harkin made this point among all the other levels of hypocracy. I guess it wasn't enough to penetrate enough of the thick heads in Congress.
It's all over anyway. Unbelievable.
Ok, I joke. It's totally believable.
I guess voting those jokers out is the only way.
